The Fundamentals of Quality

Summary

This course provides participants the foundations of quality management’s three primary areas:

  1. Quality Assurance (QA);
  2. Quality Control (QC); and
  3. Quality Improvement (QI).


The history of quality is covered, as well as the various standards for a quality system, including ISO9001, and the Criteria for performance excellence (aka Baldrige Criteria).  Common practices for QA, QC and QI are presented, along with associated reference materials and suggested resources.

Key Learning Objectives

  • How quality evolved prior to and after WWII; through the TQM era and on to current day standards, models and practices. 
  • Quality assurance (QA): tactics for risk management and design & process capability assurance; FMEA; QFD and APQP; internal auditing.
  • Quality control (QC): Inspection (100% and sampling); testing; in-process verifications; control of non-conforming material; corrective action; supplier quality control.
  • Quality Improvement (QI): Fundamentals of kaizen, lean and six-sigma; tools for QI teams.

Course Customizations

This course can be adapted to fit specific tools, methods, forms and terminology used by the client organization.  Additional time can be added for practice and application to specific company scenarios.
